Hiring Credit Repair Services

There are certain jobs best left to professionals. Very few people would feel comfortable fixing their own engine or representing themselves in court, or letting a friend give them a haircut. On the other hand, there are other jobs that we pay others to do for us for convenience. Whether you go out to eat or pay for someone to watch your kids, many people pay for services they either can’t do for themselves or don’t have the time or energy for. There is still some debate about whether credit repair is something that you should get a professional to do for you. We interviewed a handful of people that have had their credit repaired either by themselves or by a professional credit repair company. We compiled a list of issues to consider so that you can make the best decision for your situation.

What is your time worth?

Credit repair takes a lot of time. If you are starting out from scratch, you must take time to get acquainted with the different laws the protect consumer credit rights and how you can exercise those rights. Depending on your specific situation, you then need to draft the proper letter to either dispute a inaccurate item on your credit report, request verification of the accuracy of items on your credit report, or request a creditor to consider the whole life of your account before reporting a negative credit item. Once you write the request, you may not receive an answer right away which means escalating the issue via applicable laws. You have to ask yourself what you are giving up by spending all this time on researching your credit. In many cases, you can pay a credit repair company $50-100/month which depending on your hourly pay at work could be made up in a matter of a couple hours worth of work.

How good are you at dealing with stress?

Creditors and credit bureaus don’t make any money when dealing with your consumer requests.  By law they have to respond to your inquiries but they are usually not thrilled with doing it because it takes their employees away from activities that make money for the company.  Credit bureaus in particular have gotten good at making the process complicated in an attempt to prevent consumers from exercising their credit rights. Before deciding whether or not to hire a company to repair your credit for you, consider other stressful situations you have been in in the past and ask yourself if now is the right time to deal with the bureaucracy of the credit reporting system. If you are up for a fight, credit repair will be exactly what you are looking for.  You may also decide to take a stab at it and then let the professionals take over once it gets difficult.

How quickly do I need my credit repaired?

Timing is everything. If you need something done right and right away, you may benefit from the experience of someone who has had many clients before. If you wanting to get that house, car, or loan approval right away, consider getting professional help. If it your first time repairing your credit, you are going to have to learn from trial and error that will take more time than a company with more credit repair experience.
